Christmas Lights
Why I Love San Diego Bay

The Unified Port of San Diego held a Why I Love San Diego Bay essay contest the summer of 2000. Below is the winning entry by a then 12 year old girl living in San Diego.

Why do I love San Diego Bay? Well, there are a few reasons, but I'll just tell you my favorite.

Every year near Christmas, there is a Parade of Lights in San Diego Bay, and every year, we go watch the boats in the parade. I love sitting on the side of the bay, with my feet and legs curled up under a blanket, watching the brilliantly decorated boats drift by. You can't possibly say you've experienced San Diego Bay unless you've sat for two hours getting hoarse in the chilly night air because you've been yelling Christmas greetings to the equally chilly sailors. That's definitely a part of the San Diego Bay experience.

Plus, the amazing variety of decorations and boats immediately captivates your attention. There are anywhere from 75 to 200 boats, ranging from kayaks to yachts. Personally, I like the yachts best, because after all, how much decorating can you do to a kayak? Anyway, on to decorations. Some boats have nothing, some boats have everything. Many boats have music playing and Christmas lights strung up. A lot of boat owners even take the time to painstakingly arrange the lights in a special pattern, for example, Santa Claus! The boats that throw candy get inevitable attention, but then again, most every boat does. Like I said, they captivate your attention.

So that is my favorite thing about San Diego Bay; the Parade of Lights. Can you blame me for loving it?
